Right now, the 2 oz Gargoyle Silver Round Type III is available to purchase online from JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
Each individual 2 oz Gargoyle Silver Round in this product listing comes to you in brand-new condition courtesy of the Intaglio Mint. The silver rounds of this series are available to ship individually inside of plastic flips or in tubes of 10 rounds each. The Type III design release is the first to feature what can realistically be called a “fake” gargoyle.
Eastern State Penitentiary, where the gargoyle featured in this design resides, is a historic landmark in the United States. Completed in 1829, the building was the largest and most expensive public structure in the United States. It was designed by British architect John Haviland who was inspired by the neo-Gothic prisons and asylums of 18th-century Britain and Ireland.
The obverse face of the 2 oz Gargoyle Silver Round includes the image of a gruesome-looking gargoyle staring down at the viewer. Its clawed feet clutch the edge of the structure as chains dangle from its ankles and it snarls down upon you. The words “Eastern State Penitentiary” are inscribed above the gargoyle.
Located in Philadelphia, Eastern State Penitentiary closed its doors to prisoners in 1971. As of 1991, it is the host of an annual “Terror Behind the Walls” festival during the Halloween season. It is then that this gargoyle and a duplicate, fondly known as Frank and Carson, are hoisted onto the outer façade of the structure for the fundraising event to support restoration and preservation efforts at the structure.
On the reverse side of each 2 oz Gargoyle Silver Round, you will find the common design element of the series. The Gothic window-frame design encircles the design field with “Gargoyles of the World” inscribed in the center. There is also a small gargoyle perched at the apex of the “O” in gargoyles.
