Military units throughout the ages have adopted mottos that point to their collective spirit, courage, and determination to serve as one. Modern American military units believe deeply in the concept of “leave no man behind.” Whatever the costs, all soldiers need to come home to rest in the proper place. Ancient military units had codes of honor and mottos as well. The 2 oz Morte Prima di Disonore Silver Round captures the spirit behind one of the more morbid mottos out there and are currently available to you for purchase from JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
The concept of Morte Prima di Disonore is loosely translated in English from ancient Latin as “death before dishonor.” In short, it referred to the idea that it was better to suffer defeat in battle or at the hands of a foe in a duel than surrender or otherwise dishonor yourself. Although this phrase is attributed to Ancient Rome, it was also practiced in Ancient Japan with the concept of Bushido.
Although it is not known if the phrase was actually uttered in this exact form, the idea of avoiding the dishonor of surrender by fighting to the death existed in Rome during the time of the Roman Republic. Catiline, a Roman politician who lived from 108 to 62 BC, urged the concept in his attempts to overthrow the Republic in favor of an empire.
On the obverse side of 2 oz Morte Prima di Disonore Silver Rounds is the image of a human skull in left-profile relief wearing a Roman helmet. The helmet and skull are pierced by a short sword that cuts through the top of the helmet and emerges through the mouth of the skull. An inscription along the bottom of the round includes the phrase “Morte Prima di Disonore.”
The reverse face of Morte Prima di Disonore Silver Rounds includes a high-relief strike of a winged skull. This skull is pierced by three daggers running from the base of the skull through the top of the skull. There is a banner that drapes along the bottom of the design field that bears the English translation, “Death Before Dishonor.”
These 2 oz Morte Prima di Disonore Silver Rounds are available to you from the Intaglio Mint for individual or bulk purchases. Singular silver rounds are housed inside of protective plastic flips, while mint tubes containing up to 10 silver rounds are also available.
