The Battle of Thermopylae lasted just seven days in total with three days of active battle, but it was arguably among the most important encounters of the second Persian invasion of Greece. The overwhelming Persian force marching toward Greece had a 150,000-man army that the combined Greek city-states would not have been able to defeat on the open field of battle.
All 2 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds listed here are in brand-new condition with the fifth design in the series on the obverse. Individual rounds ship inside of protective plastic flips and mint tubes are available for multiples of 10 rounds.
King Leonidas of Sparta agreed to lead a joint force to the narrow coastal pass near Thermopylae. Anchored by his 300 elite Spartan warriors, the force numbered some 7,000 in all compared to the 150,000 men of the Persian Army. Leonidas and his Spartans held their ground through three days of battle to slow the advance of the Persians, eventually fighting until the last man was dead.
On the obverse of 2 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds is the depiction of a wounded Spartan soldier valiantly fighting onward. With shields and spears at the ready, the Spartans stand shoulder-to-shoulder with one another to hold off the Persian advance. The main warrior in the center has taken two arrows to his thigh, but that hasn’t slowed him as he fights on to grasp an enemy by the throat and thrust a spear into him.
The reverse of 2 oz Molon Labe Rounds includes the Intaglio Mint seal. This seal features a column in the shape of an “I” with a radial sunburst background in the central design field. The outer edge of the design field has a hammered finish with five bullets on either side of the design field.
