Each 2 oz Molon Labe Silver Round Type III available to you here today comes inside of a protective plastic flip. Purchases of multiples arrive in tubes of 5 or 10 rounds. The rounds have beautiful finishes to both sides with slightly frosted elements and mirrored background fields. This is the third design in the series and it features on the newest 2 oz silver rounds in the collection.
Molon labe is remembered as a Spartan, and Greek in general, statement of defiance. History tells us that the Spartan king, Leonidas, responded to a Persian offer for his forces to surrender and survive with the phrase “molon labe.” Translated into modern English, it means “come and take them” and was said in reference to his soldiers’ weapons.
On the obverse side of 2 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds, you’ll find the image of a strong Spartan warrior kneeling as he holds his shield above his head to protect himself from a wave of incoming Persian arrows. At his feet lay the bodies of dozens of dead Persian warriors, cut down by the powerful Spartans.
Unable to break the Spartans at first with waves of foot soldiers, the Persian Army unleashed thousands of arrows on the Spartan defenders. When one of Leonidas’ soldiers worried about the number of arrows blocking out the sun, he wryly responded: “won’t it be nice, then, that we’ll have shade in which to fight them.” Such a statement is fitting of a man who also uttered “molon labe” to a force that had far superior numbers.
The reverse of 2 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds includes the Intaglio Mint logo. The logo reflects the appearance of a Roman column with an “I” shape. The background field has a radial sunburst for visual brilliance and the outer edge of the field includes a stippled border area.
