The Molon Labe collection of silver rounds from Intaglio Mint now features a total of three different depictions of defiant Spartan soldiers. Some of the designs specifically capture the moments when King Leonidas and his 300 Spartans held off a numerically superior force of Persians. It was this moment in history that reputedly gave society the phrase molon labe, a defiant statement of resistance.
All 2 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds in this listing come with a protective flip. These rounds have the Type I design from Intaglio Mint, which is now available on these new 2 oz silver rounds in addition to the original 1 oz silver rounds the design debuted on. Multiples are offered in mint tubes of 5 or 10 rounds.
On the obverse of 2 oz Molon Labe Rounds, the right-profile portrait of a Spartan warrior dominates the foreground. He is depicted with his traditional Spartan helmet on and a spear in his hands. You can see the cape attached to his shoulders flowing down his back. In the central background, there is a battle scene that plays out as hundreds of Spartans on foot and on horseback charge into battle ready to defeat the enemy.
The phrase molon labe is often translated into English today as “come and take them.” The words were famously muttered by King Leonidas at the Battle of Thermopylae. Vastly outnumbered by the Persians, Leonidas was confident his forces could hold off the Persians long enough for the rest of Greek to gather an army. Though he knew it was a hopeless fight, when offered a chance to lay down his weapons and live, Leonidas responded by saying that his weapons were over there in the hands of his soldiers, “come and take them.”
For the reverse field of 2 oz Molon Labe Silver Rounds, Intaglio Mint features its “I” mint logo in the center of the field. There is a radial sunburst design around the mint logo and the outer edge of the design field has a stippled finish.
