The common idiom of Davy Jones’ locker reflects the state of death among drowned sailors who find themselves at the bottom of the sea. The origins of the name Davy Jones are unclear, but he is known as a sailors’ devil and may have come from a 19^th century dictionary with a reference to the “ghost of Jonah.”
