A stele (sometimes called a stela) is simply a carving made from stone or wood. Generally, these carvings are slightly narrow in shape with a greater height than width. Similar to many classical works of art, steles were often religious in nature. The steles of South Korea were mainly crafted in honor of the Buddha during the Unified Silla era, which last from the seventh century until 935.
The obverse of 2 oz Buddhist Stele of Amitabha Gichuk Silver Bars features Amitabha Buddha at the center. Buddha is in a sitting pose above a pond with a lotus flower. On either side of this image, there are rows of three standing Buddhas arranged symmetrically. Also on the obverse are Bodhisattvas, which are figures with the potential to reach nirvana. Additional characters include the disciple Arhat and the spirit Yachasang.
This stele differs from other similar designs in that its structure is thinner and more curved at the top. On the reverse side of the bar there is a rough, textured pattern that resembles the coarse stone from which the original stele was carved.
