The design of this particular $2 Legal Tender Note reflects distinctive images that have been added by Merrick Mint. These visuals commemorate the 1752 kite experiment performed by Benjamin Franklin. Though the authenticity of his experiment remains unknown to this day, it is said to have taken place in June of that year. The concept involved placing a conductive wire at the top of the kite and flying it up into clouds during storms.
Obverse depictions on the $2 Benjamin Franklin Kite Experiment Legal Tender Notes show Benjamin Franklin’s popular portrait at the center. To his right, the American bald eagle is seated on the US national shield with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace. To his left, a popular vignette of Franklin performing the kite experiment with his son. This vignette previously appeared on the $10 National Bank Note between the 1860s and 1890s.
Reverse design elements on the Benjamin Franklin Kite Experiment Legal Tender Note include the traditional $2 bill design. This features John Trumbull’s canvas painting of the presentation of a draft of the Declaration of Independence to the Continental Congress. This replica of the painting has featured on the $2 Federal Reserve Note since its introduction in 1976.
