In the midst of the Great Depression, the federal government recalled all gold coins from circulation to be melted into gold bars. As a result, the few gold coin varieties to survive the recall have immense value that goes well beyond the gold content of each individual coin.
The Pre-1933 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle coin is the predecessor to the $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter coin. Both the reverse and obverse designs were altered, and these coins were produced from 1908 until 1929. Unlike its predecessor, only two mints contributed to the production of these coins. The Philadelphia Mint struck coins with no mint mark, while a “D” identified coins from the Denver Mint.
On the reverse side of these coins is the image of a bald eagle perched atop a quiver of arrows. A national symbol of the country’s willingness to defend itself in war, the quiver of arrows is wrapped in an olive branch. The latter image is symbolic of the nation’s desire for peace.
The obverse side of each coin features the left-profile bust of a Native American chieftain. Wearing a full headdress, he is encircled by the engravings “Liberty” above, the year of minting below, and 13 stars around the edge to represent America’s original colonies. Bela Lyon Pratt designed the images featured on both sides of the coin.
Each coin available through this product listing is in VF, or very fine, condition. Light wear is noticeable on the coin’s minor features, but the major features still have sharp details. Contrary to other coins, the design features on both sides of these coins are sunk into the coin, rather than raised.
