In 1999, the United States Mint saw increased demand for its Gold Eagle Coins. Amidst the uncertainty of the Y2K crisis, both the BU and Proof Gold Eagles saw an increase in demand from buyers. Coin Highlights:
All four weights in the Proof Gold Eagle Series experienced a jump in demand in 1999 as the Y2K crisis hit its peak. The 1/10 oz coin had the smallest year-over-year jump, but maintained the highest mintage among the four weights. The 1 oz gold coin had the second-lowest mintage behind the 1/2 oz coin, but had the largest jump in overall demand from 25,886 the previous year to 31,427 in 1999.
All 1999-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins offered here come in the original United States Mint box. The coin is housed in a capsule within a presentation box and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The coins are proof specimens with frosted designs and mirrored background fields.
On the obverse of 1999-W Proof American Gold Eagles, you will find Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ image of Lady Liberty. This front-facing relief shows Liberty walking toward the viewer with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The background field includes sunrays, a ring of stars, and the U.S. Capitol Building.
The reverse side of the 1999-W 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle Coin comes with a depiction of a family of bald eagles. The image shows a female bald eagle in the family nest with small hatchlings. A male eagle is shown soaring above the nest.
