On the obverse side of all American Gold Eagle coins is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty. First designed in 1908 under the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt, Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image didn’t appear on the Saint-Gaudens’ $20 Gold Double Eagle until a few months after his death.
The reverse side of the coin features a family of nesting bald eagles, as designed by Miley Busiek in 1985. Engravings on this side of the coin include “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “In God We Trust.” The face value, weight, metal content, and purity of the coin are also inscribed on this side.
Each of these coins from the United States Mint received a perfect grade from the PCGS. Coins in PR70 condition have brilliant luster and no visual flaws. The deep-cameo finish creates a unique appearance where the design set appears to float above the background field.
