Renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was famed for the numerous monuments and memorials he created, many of which still stand today. One of the most enduring parts of his legacy was in numismatics: Theodore Roosevelt recruited him to beautify America’s currency, and his $20 gold piece known as the Double Eagle proved to be one of the most beautiful American coins ever made. The U.S. Mint celebrates it through the American Eagle Coin Program, which combines the classic Saint-Gaudens designs with the work of modern medallic artists. The 1999-W 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is now available for purchase from JM Bullion.

One of the most famous figures of the American Renaissance in the arts, Augustus Saint-Gaudens created such iconic sculptures as The Puritan and Diana of the Tower, the latter of which was a long-time feature of the New York skyline. When he turned his hand to numismatics, the first issue of his Double Eagle gold piece was an ultra high-relief design far ahead of its time. High-relief versions of that coin circulated for international commerce between 1907 and 1933, becoming one of America’s best-known coins.
The 1999-W Proof American Gold Eagle Coin commemorates that legacy with a high-quality proof finish, showcasing the coin’s full, original luster and a blemish-free surface. Its mint mark identifies it as a striking from the West Point Mint, and it ships in a secure box packaging with a Certificate of Authenticity.
The coin’s obverse side faithfully recreates Saint-Gaudens’ classic image of Lady Liberty with her hair flowing, a torch in her right hand, and an olive branch in her left hand. She’s joined by the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “1999.”
The reverse side features an eagle in flight clutching an olive branch, returning to his mate and their hatchlings in a nest below. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “25 DOLLARS,” along with a “W” mint mark.
