In 1989, the gold bullion coin market only had a handful of options available to investors. The South African Krugerrand and Canadian Maple Leaf were the oldest, having been available for 22 years and 10 years, respectively, at this point.
Other options at the time included the Chinese Panda, American Eagle, and Australian Kangaroo, though each of these had been around for just a few years at this time. The Austrian Philharmonic debuted with 1 oz and 1/4 oz gold coins, before eventually growing in the 1990s to include 1/10 oz and 1/2 oz gold coins.
Obverse designs on the 1999 1 oz Gold Philharmonic Coin include the Great Pipe Organ. This fixture of the Musikverein is the third version of a grand organ installed inside the concert hall since the 1870s when the building was finished.
Reverse visuals on 1999 Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins include a cluster of musical instruments, with a total of eight instruments in all on the field. The design includes a cello, four violins, a harp, a bassoon, and a French horn. The designs on both sides were created by Austrian Mint Chief Engraver Thomas Pesendorfer.
These 1999 1 oz Austrian Gold Philharmonic Coins are available to you for purchase with individual flips. The 1999 release had a mintage of 230,700 coins. This was the third-lowest mintage in the series to this point in its history.
