In 1999, the US Mint produced more American Gold Eagle coins than in any year since introducing the American Gold Eagle series in 1986. While the 1 oz and the 1/10 oz Gold Eagles lead the demand in 1999, the number of 1/4 oz Gold Eagles minted in 1999 – 564,232 - is second only to the number of 1/4 oz gold coins minted in its inaugural year – 726,031. The significant increase in the demand for the American Gold Eagle coins, of any denomination, was attributed to the uncertainty surrounding the approach of Y2K. Currently, this 1999 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle coin is available for purchase from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
The obverse of the 1999 American Gold Eagle coin features a Lady Liberty walking right at you. This design was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and depicts a full-length figure of Lady Liberty walking, her hair flowing behind her, a torch in her extended right hand, and an olive branch in her left hand.
The reverse of the 1999 American Gold Eagle coin features a nest of eagles, with an eagle flying overhead. This design was created by Miley Busiek. It includes several inscriptions as well.
Many numismatists believe this design to be the best coin design ever. The combination of classic and modern design has proven to be a winner through the years
1999 was an interesting year for the price of gold, mostly due to growing demand and uncertainty about the future. Gold began the year at $287 per ounce, slowing falling to about $255 an ounce, where it remained for several months. Then there was a quick spike in the price to $325 an ounce at the end of September before settling out the year at about $290 per ounce.
