On the obverse side of the 1999 1/2 oz Gold Panda Coin is the Hall of Prayer for Abundant Harvests, the prominent structure within Beijing’s Temple of Heaven Complex. The image captures the monumental staircase ascending to the entrance of the temple, providing an architectural glimpse into Chinese cultural heritage.
The reverse artwork on the 1999 Chinese Gold Panda shows a Giant Panda standing on a rock ledge. The panda appears to be inquisitively peering over the edge of the rock cliff as bamboo shoots are depicted in the background field.
The giant panda’s native habitat is confined exclusively to mountainous bamboo forests in central China, primarily across six isolated mountain ranges in the provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu. Historically, pandas inhabited lowland areas as well, but human development has pushed their populations to elevations between 5,000 and 13,000 feet, where cool, misty conditions support the growth of their staple food source: bamboo.
