1998 marks the twelfth year of the Gold Eagles. Since the collection’s initial release in 1986, the 1 oz weight denomination of this coin has been manufactured and distributed by the West Point Mint. Fractional coins in this series were originally struck by the Philadelphia Mint, but after 1993, the production of these weight denominations was also transitioned to the West Point Mint.
On the obverse of the 1998-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is the image of Lady Liberty. This design was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was originally taken from his Double-Eagle design. It’s also been the exclusive image featured on the American Gold Eagle coin since the series began. In the image, Lady Liberty is seen walking forward toward the viewer with both arms extended. She holds a torch high in the air, while the other hand holds onto an olive branch.
The reverse of the 1998-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows Miley Busiek’s eagle family design. In the image, a female eagle is shown nesting with her eaglets while waiting for the male eagle’s arrival. The male eagle flies overhead and carries an olive branch in his talons.
