The American Gold Eagle bears some of the most iconic images in American history. Lady Liberty graces the obverse face of every coin, a symbol of the nation’s freedom and democracy. An American bald eagle is found on the reverse, representing the majesty, power, and longevity of the United States. Today, these images are available on the 1998 American Gold Eagle proof coin courtesy of JM Bullion.

Proof American Gold Eagle coins were introduced in 1986 alongside the bullion version of the coin, but were not readily available in all four weights like the bullion. The fractional-weight coins were phased in for the proof program over the course of two years. These ½ oz coins were introduced in 1987, while the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins were made available in 1988.
Each 1998 American Gold Eagle available for purchase today is a perfect proof specimen according to the PCGS. Coins with a PR70 grade have full, original mint luster and lack any signs of damage or flaws of any kind.
Deep-cameo is a term used to define the visual finish of a proof coin. Coins with the DCAM designation have a strong, frosted finish on the design sets (such as Liberty or the Eagle) and a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
On the obverse of each coin is the image of Lady Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Originally used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933, this design was never seen by Saint-Gaudens on an American coin as he died from illness months before the US Mint released the coins.
The reverse features the depiction of a family of bald eagles. In the design from Miley Busiek, a male bald eagle is flying over a nest that holds a group of hatchlings watched closely by the female eagle.
