The U.S. Mint’s proof coin sets have been annual favorites in numismatics, with a particular reputation as great starter sets for the beginning collector, for many decades. A particularly popular run of these sets occurred between 1992 and 1998: these were the earliest years of proof sets that included 90% silver offerings, and they had consistent packaging that included Premier sets packaged in velvet-lined display cases. The final year of five-coin proof sets was 1998, at the cusp of a major change in American coinage. It was also the last year of the Premier silver proof set, of which nearly a quarter million were sold on their original releases. The 1998 US Mint Premier Silver Proof Set is available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Proof coin sets have been a continuous mainstay of the U.S. Mint’s annual releases since 1936, although the tradition actually goes back much further. American proof coinage first appeared in 1817, when a fire at the Philadelphia Mint led to the loss of equipment and the introduction of new technology, and by 1858 the Mint was producing proof sets for the collectors’ market. They were issued continuously until the Great War interrupted production in 1916, and new sets were resumed three decades later, continuing to the present.
The 1998 US Mint Premier Silver Proof Set arrives in its original velvet-lined display case, which by this point can show signs of wear but still preserves the coins in dazzling visual quality. The coins were created with a cameo contrast effect — a combination of frosted raised details and mirror-like fields — using hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes.
Each set contains five coins: the Lincoln Cent and Jefferson Nickel with their standard composition, and the Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar in 90% silver. Each coin’s obverse side features a bust of its eponymous President and an inscription of the year of issue. The reverse fields feature unique designs whose elements include their face value and the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
