Available at the time in only bullion and proof, demand was low across the board. Right now, the 1998-P Proof American Silver Eagle is available from JM Bullion in perfect condition.

All 1998 Proof American Silver Eagle coins available to you right now in this listing are perfect specimens. The PCGS issued these coins a PR70 grade because they have their full, original mint luster, and feature no detracting flaws of any kind.
The deep-cameo designation is reserved for proof coins with visual brilliance. The strong, frosted finish of the design sets stands in stark contrast to the deeply-mirrored, clear background fields visible on the coin.
When the American Silver Eagle was first introduced, the proof version of the coin was struck by the San Francisco Mint. From 1994 to 2000, production of the proof coins shifted to the Philadelphia Mint, making this coin among the final years of production in Philadelphia before the West Point Mint took over in 2001.
On the obverse of all American Silver Eagle coins is the image of Walking Liberty. Originally used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947, this image depicts Lady Liberty walking toward the setting sun with the American flag draped around her shoulders.
The heraldic eagle on the reverse is a national symbol of the United States. The bald eagle is featured clutching its famous arrows and olive branch, while sitting behind a heraldic shield that includes 13 stars overhead as a representation of the nation’s original colonies.
