After demand for American Silver Eagles nosedived in the early 1990s, the program saw renewed interest for the BU and Proof versions as the century came to a close and storm clouds appeared on the horizon. Now, 1998-P 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagle Coins are available for purchase online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Throughout its history, Proof Silver Eagles have been struck by three branches of the United States Mint. San Francisco struck the coins from 1986 to 1992, and has returned as a supplemental coining partner since 2018. West Point Mint has struck the coins annually as of 2001.
From 1993 to 2000, it was the Philadelphia Mint’s role to produce Proof American Silver Eagles. The Philadelphia Mint took over at a time when demand for Proof Silver Eagles was at its lowest point. With the exception of the early COVID-19 pandemic era, no period of Proof Silver Eagle production was lower than the mid-to-late 1990s.
The obverse design of the 1998-P 1 oz Proof Silver Eagle features a portrait of Liberty. Known as Walking Liberty, this design shows her full-length figure in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun draped in the American flag.
On the reverse of 1998-P Proof American Silver Eagles, you will find the heraldic eagle design. This visual was initially created in 1794 by Robert Scot, but has been modified and modernized several times. This particular version was updated in 1986 by John Mercanti.
These 1998-P 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagle Coins are PF70 specimens with full, original mint luster and no flaws. UCAM stands for ultra-cameo proof and indicates the coins have strong, frosted designs with deeply-mirrored, clear fields.
