The 1998 Silver Britannia was a big first in two ways. This date mark is the first in the silver series to use Philip Nathan’s modern depiction of Britannia on the reverse. It is also the first in the silver series to use the 1998 portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II from Ian Rank-Broadley. The debut release in 1997 featured Raphael Maklouf’s 1985 bust of the Queen.
In the obverse of 1998 British Silver Britannia Coins, the Royal Mint features Ian Rank-Broadley’s bust of Her Majesty for the first time. This 1998 depiction of the Queen depicts Her Majesty in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

This depiction shows Britannia standing in front-facing relief as she looks toward the trident in her right hand.
