For the second year in a row, American Silver Eagle coins saw a jump in demand. Although the uptick in 1998 was nominal compared to the years to come, it was a positive sign of growth in the demand for bullion precious metals as Y2K fears began to creep into the national consciousness. The increase in mintage for the Silver Eagles in 1998 was modest at just over 500,000 coins. However, it was the second year that demand had grown and was part of a four-year run leading up to 2000 when mintage would hit 9.239 million coins. Much of this was driven by concerns surrounding the upcoming Y2K situation.

Coins with the Mint State 69 certification showcase full, original mint luster and no more than two minor detracting flaws. Silver prices showed signs of strength in 1998. The price spiked upward to a high of $7.81 per ounce early in the year and hit a low of $5.00 by mid-year. The average price of silver throughout the year was $5.55 per ounce, which though lower than its high for the year, marked an increase compared to the year before.
On the obverse side of American Silver Eagle coins is the iconic design of Walking Liberty. The image featured here was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman and featured on the half-dollar coin in the US until 1947. The image includes Liberty in left-profile relief walking toward the setting sun on the horizon.
The reverse face of 1998 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins features the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design originated on the first American coins issued back in 1794 and was modernized for this series in 1986.
