The 1998 release of American Gold Eagles from the United States Mint marked the second-highest mintage to date in the series and was part of a brief period of surging demand. The uncertainty of Y2K on the horizon pushed demand for gold, in particular, upward in the late 1990s. Today, 1998 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins are available to you online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Through much of the 1990s, American Gold Eagle demand was quite low. Following the debut of the coins in 1986, the demand dropped each year through 1991. From 1991 to 1997, mintage grew each year, with the exception of 1996. However, the series saw one of its strongest periods of year-over-year growth from 1997 to 1999.
All of the 1998 1/4 oz American Gold Eagle Coins are available to purchase with protective flips. The mintage of 309,829 1/4 oz Gold Eagles in 1998 marked the second-highest increase year-over-year in the history of the series. The jump in demand from 1997 to 1998 was 201,024 coins.
On the obverse side of 1998 1/4 oz Gold Eagles is a depiction of Lady Liberty as created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The image was created in 1907 by Saint-Gaudens at the behest of President Theodore Roosevelt. The design replaced the Liberty Head design on the $20 Gold Double Eagle and features Liberty’s full-length figure in front-facing relief with a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The field is surrounded by 50 stars, one for each state in the Union, and includes the U.S. Capitol Building at her feet.
The reverse field of the 1998 American Gold Eagle comes with an image of a family of American bald eagles. This design was created for the series in 1986 and the design has been used exclusively on the coins of the American Gold Eagle Series. The image features a male eagle in flight with a branch in its talons as a female eagle is perched in the nest with hatchlings.
