The 1997 Proof American Gold Eagle coins fell in mintage from 1996, marking the second consecutive year that the Proof Gold Eagles fell. The 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coin released in 1997 experienced the least severe drop in mintage, due in large part to the release of a special coin set by the US Mint.
In 1997, the US Mint released the Impressions of Liberty Set which included a 1oz Proof American Gold Eagle coin. With a total of 4,965 sets sold, the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle retreated less in 1997 than its fractional-weight counterparts.
All of the 1997 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins in this product listing come to you with a perfect certification. Coins with a PF70 certification exhibit full, original mint luster and lack all signs of detracting flaws in the design elements and background surfaces.
The included UCAM labels stand for ultra-cameo and refer to the visual brilliance of the coins. The design elements have strong, frosted matte visuals along with a deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
On the obverse of all 1997 Proof American Gold Eagles coins is Lady Liberty. This design appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coin from 1907 to 1933 and was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The Irish-American engraver and sculptor was approached directly by President Theodore Roosevelt to help revitalize American coinage in 1905.
The reverse of the 1997 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins features the design of bald eagles. Created exclusively for the Gold Eagle collection by Miley Busiek, the design includes a male eagle flying over the nest where a female guards over hatchlings.
