The 1997-W 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin was struck with 22 karats of actual gold content by the West Point Mint, which is indicated by the “W” mint marking featured on one side of the coin. This coin features a metal combination of 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver, and has a special proof finish. This type of coin finish indicates that the designs featured on the coin are frosted while the backgrounds are mirrored.

The 1/10 fractional-weight American Gold Eagle coin was first placed on the bullion market in 1988. At the time, this weight denomination was exclusively being manufactured and distributed by the Philadelphia Mint. However, after 1993, the production of all weights moved to the West Point Mint, where one-ounce coins in this collection were already being produced.
The obverse of the 1997-W 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows Lady Liberty, who strides forward confidently. In one hand she holds a torch high in the sky, while the other hand grasps an olive branch. Behind her, the viewer will notice large sun rays extending into the sky to highlight her magnificence. This design was taken from the original Double Eagle design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and has been used as the featured obverse design in the American Gold Eagle collection.
An exclusive design by Miley Busiek featuring a family of eagles is shown on the reverse of the 1997-W 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin. In the nest, a female eagle sits with her eaglet. They wait for the arrival of the male eagle, who flies overhead with an olive branch in between its talons. Other specs about the coin are included on the reverse as well, including its weight, purity, and value.
