The innovations in the new equipment made proof coins possible, and employees of the Mint began to experiment, showcasing their skills on pieces that eventually became the basis for the tradition of publicly-released proof sets we see today: created with hand-selected planchets, polished dies, and multiple strikes.
The 1997 US Mint Premier Silver Proof Set still comes in its distinctive original-mint packaging. Years on, that packaging can show signs of wear, but the coins within remain dazzling. 1997 saw one of the most restricted mintages of silver Proof sets for the era -- just over 600,000 in total and even fewer Premier sets -- so supplies are limited.
Each set contains five coins: the Lincoln Cent and Jefferson Nickel in their standard composition, and the Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar in 90% silver. Each coin's obverse side features a bust of its President and an inscription of the year of issue. The reverse fields each feature unique designs that include their face value and the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA."
