The United States Mint introduced its first platinum bullion coin in 1997. The American Platinum Eagle was the first American Eagle variant, and remains the only one, to use modern depictions of Lady Liberty and the American bald eagle, rather than historic versions from previous circulation coins. Today, 1997 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Mercanti’s Liberty head design for the obverse of Platinum Eagles draws inspiration from the Statue of Liberty, featuring a classical profile with flowing hair and a crown of stars representing the original thirteen colonies. This design, used on America’s platinum bullion coins since 1997, emphasizes dignity and timeless American ideals through its neoclassical styling.
All 1997 1 oz American Platinum Eagle Coins available here come in protective plastic flips. 1997 marks the first year of availability for Platinum Eagles, and the 1 oz BU coin issued in 1997 holds the third-highest mintage. It is behind only the 1998 coin (133,002) and the 1999 coin (56,707).
On the obverse of 1997 American Platinum Eagles, you will find the Statue of Liberty’s face. This design from Mercanti is the only modern depiction of Liberty on a coin in the American Eagle bullion series, with the gold, silver, and palladium variants using iconic images from early 20th-century American coins.
The reverse of 1997 1 oz Platinum Eagle Coins features a depiction of the American bald eagle from Thomas D. Rogers. The design shown here is the only one to grace both the BU and Proof versions of the Platinum Eagle, a feat it achieved in both 1997 and 2017. It depicts an eagle gliding over the land with the sun rising from the horizon in the distance.
