The American Eagle Coin program was launched by the United States Mint in 1986. Originally, the program only featured gold and silver coins, but today, the come in gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. Coins are produced in both proof and bullion options, and the gold coins come in various fractional sizes that allow for those on a budget to purchase these beautiful gold coins. The designs differ by metal type, but the themes stay the same.
The obverse imagery on these coins was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 for use on the $20 Gold Double Eagle Coins. The design features Lady Liberty walking away from the Capitol building. The sunshine is hitting her back. In her right hand, she carries a lit torch, while he has an olive branch in her left hand. You can see the inscriptions “Liberty” and the year of mint “1997.”
On the reverse, you will find the image of a bald eagle family as designed by sculptor Miley Busiek. In the image, a male bald eagle returns to a nest where a female and their hatchlings rest. The male carries an olive branch in his talons. This design was created especially for these coins back in 1986 when the program launched.
