Proof American Gold Eagle coins were introduced in the 1/4 oz weight in 1988, and featured relatively stable mintage levels throughout the first decade. Mintage of the coins varied from 47,000 in 1995 to 62,000 in 1990. In 1996 however, the program saw a drop of nearly 11,000 coins.
The drop continued the following year, establishing a short-term trend of dropping mintages for the Proof American Gold Eagle. The 1/4 oz. coin, originally not the most popular, has become one of the preferred weights in the program.
Each 1996-W 1/4 oz Proof American Gold Eagle listed here today has a grade of PR70 from the PCGS. Coins in this condition exhibit full, original luster from the mint and bear no detracting flaws of any kind.
Deep-cameo is a term used to describe the unique visual appeal of a proof coin. DCAM refers to the strong, frosted finish on the design set of the coin and the deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
On the coins obverse field youll find the Lady Liberty image from Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which was created in 1907. The reverse face of the coin includes the image of a family of nesting bald eagles created by Miley Busiek in 1986.
