The American Eagle Coin Program pays tribute to the famous $20 gold piece known as the Double Eagle, widely considered one of America’s most beautiful historical coins. Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and minted from 1907 to 1933, the original provides the inspiration for a modern series of gold bullion coins that began issue by Congressional order from the U.S. Mint in 1986. For much of their run, these coins have featured a combination of the original Saint-Gaudens’ designs with the work of medallic artist Miley Busiek. The 1996-W 1/2 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is available now from JM Bullion.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens was a luminary of the American Renaissance working in the Beaux Arts style. His monuments, memorials, and tributes to Classical sculpture attained widespread fame, and his “Diana of the Tower” was a long-time feature of the New York skyline. When he responded to Theodore Roosevelt’s call to help beautify American coinage, he delivered a high-relief design that was ahead of its time in numismatics. It would circulate in international trade for more than a quarter century and become one of the most famous American coins ever made.
The U.S. Mint celebrates this achievement annually through the American Eagle Coin Program, and the 1994-W Proof American Gold Eagle Coin delivers that tribute with a high-quality proof finish: full, original luster and a blemish-free surface. It ships to you fully insured in secure box packaging, along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
The coin’s obverse side features Saint-Gaudens’ classic image Lady Liberty with hair flowing, a torch in her right hand, and an olive branch in her left hand. She’s accompanied by the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “1994.”
The reverse side features an eagle in flight clutching an olive branch over a nest containing his mate and her hatchlings. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “25 DOLLARS,” along with a “W” mint mark to indicate the coin was struck at the West Point Mint.
