JM Bullion is proud to offer authentic 1996 American Silver Eagle Coins produced by the US Mint. The NGC has graded these coins as MS69. They are composed of one troy-ounce of fine silver, and are a fine acquisition for investors and collectors seeking to expand their collections of fine silver.
The obverse side of the coin was designed by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916 to replace Charles C. Barber’s half dollar. The design was well received, but proved difficult to strike well because of its high relief, so it was discontinued in 1947. Due to popular demand, Walking Liberty was re-designed with a lower relief and reinstated for the 1986 Silver Eagle, and remains in mint until this day.
The reverse side of the coin features the image used for the Great Seal of the United States. The eagle’s head is turned left. Its wings are spread wide, and it bears the classic American Shield. Thirteen five-pointed stars are placed above the eagle’s head. It’s left talons clasp an olive branch and its right talon clasps arrows.
This image has been updated from the original “Left Facing Eagle” design created in 1836 by Christian Gobrecht for the Seated Liberty Dollar, which he based on a sketch by John Reich. The design has seen several updates, into the “Heraldic Eagle”, and eventually into the design that is used today. The reverse side of the coin features the image currently utilized as the Great Seal of the United States.
