The Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Series is a unique collection from the Royal Canadian Mint. Unlike its gold and silver counterparts, its production has been hot and cold. The coins were introduced in 1988 alongside the Silver Maple Leaf, with production running annually through 1999. The 2000s were largely marked by long periods without new coins being struck. Right now, 1996 1 oz Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coins are available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each 1996 1 oz Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coin comes in a protective plastic flip. The 1996 coin had the highest mintage of any 1 oz platinum coin in the Maple Leaf Series during its initial production run from 1988 to 1999. The mintage of 62,273 coins in 1996 was more than 22,000 coins higher than the next closest year (1992).
Like other Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins, the Platinum Maple Leaf features the sugar maple leaf on the reverse side, an iconic symbol of Canada. The maple leaf’s symbolic significance in Canada dates to the early 18th century when French colonists adopted it as an emblem, recognizing the sugar maple’s practical importance to survival and prosperity. Indigenous peoples had long valued maple trees for their sap, making the leaf a natural bridge between First Nations heritage and European settlement.
The obverse of 1996 Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf Coins comes with a right-profile effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here with the George IV State Diadem on her head and an elegant necklace. This is the third-generation Canadian coin portrait of Elizabeth II and the first to be created by a Canadian artist, Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
On the reverse of 1996 1 oz Platinum Maple Leaf Coins, you will find the sugar maple leaf. This image was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the Gold Maple Leaf and has subsequently featured on all versions of the coin, from silver and platinum to palladium.
