Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of 1996 1 oz Platinum Koala Coins. This is the third-generation effigy from Elizabeth II’s reign and it was created in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf. The image is a right-profile depiction of Queen Elizabeth II with the George IV State Diadem on her head.
A koala is depicted in the branch of a tree on the reverse of 1996 Australian Platinum Koalas. Koalas, iconic marsupials native to Australia, are instantly recognizable with their round, fluffy ears and spoon-shaped noses. Found in the eucalyptus forests of eastern and southern Australia, these tree-dwelling creatures are not bears, despite their nickname “koala bears.” They are, in fact, more closely related to wombats.
Koalas have a specialized diet consisting almost exclusively of eucalyptus leaves, which are toxic to most other animals. The koala’s unique digestive system allows it to break down and detoxify the eucalyptus leaves. This specialized diet, however, is low in nutrients and high in fiber, which is why koalas sleep for up to 20 hours a day to conserve energy.
