The American Eagle Coin program launched from the United States Mint in 1986. There were fewer fractional weights available at launch, but over subsequent years, other, smaller options were added to the lineup. Today, you can purchase American Gold Eagles in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. The coins also come in various finishes: bullion, proof, and uncirculated.
There are also four different precious metals options the mint releases. These metals are silver, gold, platinum, and palladium. To keep the series interesting, each of the different metals features different designs on both the obverse and reverse—although, the designs follow the same theme.
The obverse imagery is that of Lady Liberty as she walks away from the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. As the sun hits her back, we can see that she is holding a lit torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The design was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 for use on the Gold Double Eagle Coins.
On the reverse, a bald eagle family design features a large male returning home to his nest. He is carrying an olive branch in his talons. His mate and hatchling are waiting for him in the nest. This design was created just for use on these coins in 1986 by sculptor Miley Busiek.
When your Gold Eagle coins arrive at your door, they will be in clear plastic flips for protection. We recommend that you keep the coins in these flips for protection during storage, as well. The coins each contain 91.67% gold by weight, containing exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of pure 22-karat gold. The rest of the coin’s composition is copper and silver, which just makes the coins more durable.
