The Proof American Gold Eagle is the collector’s version of the official gold bullion coin. Production of the fractional-weight proof coins began in 1988 at the Philadelphia Mint, but in 1994 production was moved to the West Point Mint. Right now, you can purchase a 1994-W ½ oz Proof American Gold Eagle in perfect condition from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
American Gold Eagle coins were authorized by Congressional passage of the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Introduced in 1986 in bullion and proof, the modern coin series includes an additional uncirculated version, with all three coin types struck in four total weights each year.
On the obverse side is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ depiction of Lady Liberty. In his creation, Liberty is featured in full-length display striding forward out of the setting sun. The torch in her right hand provides a guiding light, while the olive branch in her left represents peace. The image is representative of America’s search for a brighter future and desire for peace.
Sculptor Miley Busiek was commissioned in 1986 to develop a unique depiction of the bald eagle for use on the reverse side of all American Gold Eagle coins. Her image features a male bald eagle returning to the nest with an olive branch, where a female stands guard over the nest and its hatchlings.
Each coin in this product listing has a perfect proof grade of PF70 from the NGC. Perfect proofs have full, original luster, and no blemishes. The term “Ultra-cameo,” defines a coin with a design set that appears to float above the background field.
