On the obverse side of all American Gold Eagle coins you’ll find the image of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. Originally used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle, it is considered the finest design ever used on an American coin.
The reverse face of the coin features Miley Busiek’s depiction of a family of nesting bald eagles. A gifted sculptor and artist who completed numerous public and private works of art, Busiek was commissioned to create this design specifically for the American Gold Eagle coin series in 1986.
These 1994 1/10 oz American Gold Eagle coins are unique in the series. The proof coins originated in 1986 with just a 1 oz weight available. In 1987, the US Mint added a ½ oz coin, followed by the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz proofs in 1988. The fractional-weight proofs were initially produced at the Philadelphia Mint with “P” mint marks. These are the first fractional-weight coins produced at the West Point Mint and featuring a “W” mint mark.
