The obverse of this coin features a well-known image for patriotic numismatists and those who love American coin history. The image was created by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens for another series of gold coins in the early 20th century. When the U.S. Mint launched the American Eagle Program in 1986, it dusted off this image for the obverse of all gold coins in the program. The image shows Liberty, who is stepping forward in the foreground of the coin. Behind her, sunlight streams up and seems to indicate a glorious dawn. The national capitol building is shown in the lower left, and Liberty holds the torch representing enlightenment and freedom and the olive branch representing peace.
The reverse of this 1994 American Eagle Gold Coin is also filled with patriotic symbolism. A male bald eagle is flying into his nest carrying an olive branch. In the nest, a female eagle sits along with her young. The nest itself is shown in equal detail as the eagles, and you can make out “MB” below it, which are the designer’s initials. Frost designed this image specifically for the American Eagle Program in 1986 and it was used on the reverse of all gold coins in the program through 2020.
