Proof American Gold Eagles have been available from the United States Mint since 1986 when the Gold Eagle bullion series started. The coins were originally offered only as a 1 oz gold coin in 1986, growing between 1987 and 1988 to include three fractional-ounce coins. Since that time, the only missing date came in 2009 during the Great Recession. Right now, 1993-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each of the 1993-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coins comes packaged in a protective capsule with a US Mint display box. The smaller box is wrapped in a themed outer shipper and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Proof Gold Eagles have frosted designs with mirrored background fields. The American Gold Eagle is a 22-karat gold coin with 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver in its metallic alloy.
The 1993 Proof Gold Eagle release was a notable year. First and foremost, the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle hit its lowest mintage to date with just 34,369 coins. Additionally, 1993 was the last year the fractional Proof Eagles and the 1 oz Proof Eagle were struck by different mints. West Point issued the 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle from its launch in 1986, but the fractional Proof Gold Eagles were struck by Philadelphia from 1987/1988 until 1993. The next release in 1994 was the first in which all four were struck at West Point.
The obverse of the 1993-W Proof American Gold Eagle features Lady Liberty. This iconic design was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 for the Double Eagle. It offers a front-facing effigy of Liberty in full-length relief. She walks toward the viewer with sun rays at her back, the U.S. Capitol at her feet, a torch in one hand, and an olive branch in the other.
On the reverse side of 1993-W 1 oz Proof Gold Eagle Coin is a depiction of a family of bald eagles. This design from Miley Busiek shows a male eagle in flight over the family nest as a female eagle guards the hatchling within the nest.
