While Proof American Gold Eagles are traditionally produced at the West Point Mint, in 1993, a Philadelphia Set was offered. This branch of the US Mint created 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz versions. A total of 12,689 of these units were sold, along with the 31,130 that were created by the West Point Mint to get the total mintage of 43,819. The American Gold Eagle was first released by the US Mint in 1986 thanks to the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The 1 oz proof version was released alongside the Bullion version in 1986. A 1/2 proof coin debuted the following year with the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz being released in 1988. Proof coins in this series have been issued every year since its release, outside of 2009.
