The United States Mint released the American Eagle Coin program in 1986. The mint’s offering includes 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights for American Gold Eagle Coins. In addition to these weights, the mint also offers three different finish options: bullion, proof, and uncirculated, which is also called burnished. The burnished coins aren’t available in every year and weight, however.
The mint has since released American Eagles in three other metal types: silver, platinum, and palladium. These coins will all have different designs on the obverse and reverse faces of the coins, but the themes are consistent with one another.
On the obverse, you will find the image of Lady Liberty designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907 for use on the Gold Double Eagle Coins, which were released for the first time that same year. In the design, Lady Liberty is shown striding forward with the sun hitting her back. She carries a flaming torch and olive branch as she walks away from the Capitol building in Washington D.C.
Sculptor Miley Busiek’s family of bald eagle design is showcased with a large male bald eagle returning to his nest. He also carries an olive branch in his talons. His female mate and hatchling are waiting for him in the nest. This image was originally created in 1986 specifically for use on these coins.
These coins will arrive in clear plastic flips directly from our secure facility. The flips are meant to provide protection for the surface of the coins during shipping and storage. Flips help keep dirt and dust off the coins.
Each coin contains 91.67% gold by weight, meaning each coin contains exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of 22-karat gold. The composition of the coins also includes copper and silver to make the coins stronger and more durable.
