The Silver Proof Set was introduced in 1992 by the US Mint to expand its collector product offerings. The set contains five coins, three of which are struck in 90% silver. The Silver Proof Set was very popular in its first year, with a mintage of 1,009,586 sets in 1992. Most of the remaining 1990’s endured significantly lower sales, which served to increase the value of those sets. The beauty of these coins is enhanced by their mirror-like proof finish. These sets were struck at the San Francisco Mint. JM Bullion currently has the 1992 US Mint Silver Proof Sets available for purchase.

These Silver Proof Sets contain the Lincoln Cent, the Jefferson Nickel, the Roosevelt Dime, the Washington Quarter, and the Kennedy Half Dollar. The Lincoln Cent and Jefferson Nickel are struck in the regular copper-nickel clad composition. However, the Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar are struck in 90% silver. In order to obtain the silver versions of these coins, collectors had to purchase the Silver Proof Sets. Due to the silver content of the Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar, the original pricing of this set was $21.00.
The Silver Proof Set comes in a distinctive black package that is otherwise similar to the package for the regular Proof Set. Each coin is placed in an individual space in black cardboard, which is placed inside a plastic lens that has the word Silver printed on it. This is placed into the black outer box.
In 1992, the US Mint offered 4 Proof Sets. The regular Proof Set contains the standard composition versions of the Cent, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar, with an original price of $11.00. This was the most popular annual set and had sales of 2,675,618 sets in 1992. The Prestige Proof Set contains the standard composition versions of the Cent, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar in addition to the Olympic Half Dollar and the Silver Dollar Commemorative coins, with an original price of $56.00. The Silver Premier Set contains the same coins as the Silver Proof Set (standard composition Cent and Nickel, 90% silver Dime, Quarter, and Half Dollar), however, with more ornate packaging. This set had an original price of $37.00.
