The history of the modern U.S. Mint Silver Proof Set began when a fire at the Philadelphia Mint destroyed much of its equipment in 1817. The event was a cloud with, one might say, a silver lining: it compelled the Mint to purchase new minting equipment from Europe that made it possible to create multiple-strike proof coins. Over subsequent years, mint employees used the new technology to strike proof coins that showcased their skills, many of which can now be found in the Smithsonian. By 1936, the Mint began selling complete Proof Sets, a tradition that continues right down to the present as one of the Mint’s most popular annual releases. The 1992 US Mint Premier Silver Proof Set celebrated the bicentennial anniversary of the Mint, and is available now from JM Bullion.

As a celebration of the two-hundred-year anniversary of the U.S. Mint’s founding, 1992’s Silver Proof Sets included a Premium set with elegant display case packaging. The year was a key date that saw copper-and-nickel denominations in the set replaced with pieces minted in 90% pure silver. Each set was crafted using hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce a stunning proof finish with frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.
The 1992 US Mint Premier Silver Proof Set ships in its original mint packaging, with the coins inside preserved in excellent condition even though the packaging may at this point show signs of wear and tear. Each shipment is tracked and fully insured against mishaps by the JM Bullion team.
Each set contains five coins: a Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and a Kennedy Half Dollar. Each coin’s obverse side features a bust of the President for which it’s named, along with the year of issue. The reverse fields show each coin’s face value as part of its unique design, along with the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
