Proof American Gold Eagle coins are produced by the United States Mint to grab the attention of coin collectors. Coin Highlights:
The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin of the United States. When the program was introduced in 1986, the coin was available in bullion and proof versions. Though it is currently available in four weights, only the bullion coin had all four weights in the early years. The fractional-weight coins weren’t introduced in proof until 1988.
On the obverse side of each is a rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty. First used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle between 1908 and 1933, the only alteration from Saint-Gaudens’ original image is the addition of the national Capitol Building at Liberty’s feet.
The reverse side of each coin features a unique image created by sculptor Miley Busiek specifically for use on this coin program. Her image includes a male eagle returning to the nest as a female stands vigilant guard over the hatchlings.
Each coin in this series is available with a PF70 grade from the NGC. These perfect coins have their full, original luster, and no blemishes, contact marks, hairlines, or detracting flaws. Ultra-cameo is a term used to define a coin with a design set that appears to float above a deeply-mirrored background field.
