The American Eagle Coin program began in 1986. The United States Mint began the program with a few selections of American Gold Eagles, but today, there is a wide variety of options for investors and collectors to choose from. The American Gold Eagles now come in four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. There are also three different finishes: bullion, proof, and uncirculated. Uncirculated versions are also called burnished, and these coins aren’t available each year and in every weight.
Now, the mint also offers American Eagles in various other metal types, including silver, platinum, and palladium. Each different metal type features different obverse and reverse designs, but the themes are consistent with one another.
On the obverse, you will find the image of Lady Liberty designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design was originally created in 1907 for use on the Gold Double Eagle Coins, which were released for the first time that same year. Lady Liberty is shown striding forward as the sun hits her back. She carries a flaming torch and olive branch. She is walking away from the Capitol building in Washington D.C.
On the reverse, there is the depiction of a bald eagle family as designed by sculptor Miley Busiek in 1986 for these coins. In the image, a female and hatchling wait in a nest, while the large male is seen returning to them. The male is carrying an olive branch in his talons, which is a symbol of peace.
These coins will arrive in clear plastic flips directly from our secure facility. The flips provide a layer of protection for the surface of the coins during shipping and storage. Flips help keep dirt and dust off the coins, so they keep their original lusters.
Each coin contains 91.67% gold by weight, so each coin contains exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of 22-karat gold. The composition of the coins also includes copper and silver, which makes the coins stronger and more durable.
