The American Gold Eagle Coin collection was first introduced in 1987. The 1/10 oz fractional-weight gold coin wasn’t available in this collection until 1988. The Philadelphia Mint manufactured the 1/10 oz fractional-weight American Gold Eagle coins until after 1993, when production of all weight denominations in this series moved permanently to the West Point Mint.
The obverse design featured on the 1991-P 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is taken from the original Double Eagle design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, which was featured on United States twenty-dollar gold pieces from 1907 to 1933. On the obverse, Lady Liberty strides forward with confidence and radiance. Her hair flows out into the wind behind her, and she carries a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The viewer will also see the United States Capitol Building in the background at the bottom left of the coin’s obverse.
The reverse of the 1991-P 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle Coin shows a special design created by sculptor Miley Busiek. In this image, a family of eagles is shown. The male eagle flies overhead and carries an olive branch, and the female eagle waits with their hatchlings in the nest. The coin’s weight, purity, and value are also included on the reverse.
