Each of the 1991-S 1 oz Proof Silver Eagles in this listing is considered a perfect proof specimen by the NGC. Coins with a PF70 grade feature full, original mint luster and have no detracting flaws of any kind.
In order to earn a UCAM, or ultra-cameo, designation, a coin must have a strong, frosted matte finish. This is contrasted beautifully by the coin’s deeply-mirrored, clear background field. The combination of finishing characteristics give the coin the visual appearance of possessing a design that floats above the coin’s surface area.
Proof American Silver Eagle coins have been released by the United States Mint since 1986. Available in just the one ounce weight, these coins have been released every year with the exception of 2009 when American Eagle production was limited to silver bullion coins amidst intense demand for silver.
The total mintage of 1991-S 1 oz Proof American Silver Eagle coins finished at 511,924, and very few of those coins are still available today with these perfect PF70 grades and a UCAM designation.
On the obverse of the American Silver Eagle is the image of Walking Liberty, which was created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman. Originally used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar circulation coin until 1947, it depicted Liberty walking toward a setting sun in the distance.
The reverse of all 1991 Proof American Silver Eagle coins includes the heraldic eagle of the United States. First used on American coinage from the Philadelphia Mint in 1794, this design has been updated and modernized countless times in US history. This particular design was refined by US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti in 1986.
