In the fourth issue of the Platinum Koala, the 1 oz platinum coin saw its demand continue to retreat from the first two issues in 1988 and 1989. However, 1991 had a mintage nearly double that of the previous year.
Australian Platinum Koala coins were available from Perth Mint from 1988 to 2000. Perth Mint initially offered the coins in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz platinum, and later introduced 1 Kilo, 10 oz, and 2 oz platinum options. The series was canceled after 2000 due to plummeting demand for platinum.
Obverse designs on 1991 Australian Platinum Koalas include a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The most common portrait to feature on the coins during its run, this image shows Her Majesty in right-profile relief wearing the George IV State Diadem. This design was created in 1985 by Raphael Maklouf.
Reverse visuals on the 1991 1 oz Platinum Koala depict a koala clinging to a tree. Like the coins of the modern Silver Koala bullion series, these historic Platinum Koalas offer ever-changing depictions of the koala in its native habitat.
