The American Eagle Coin program began in 1986 with a few selections of American Gold Eagles, but today, there is a wide variety of options. The American Gold Eagles now come in four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. There are also three different finishes: bullion, proof, and uncirculated.
Now, the mint also offers American Eagles in various other metal types, including silver, platinum, and palladium. Each different metal features different designs, but the themes remain the same.
On the obverse, you will find Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ image of Lady Liberty. This design was originally created in 1907 for use on the Gold Double Eagle Coins, which were released for the first time that same year. Lady Liberty is shown walking forward with the sun at her back. She carries a flaming torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other as she walks away from the Capitol building in Washington D.C.
The reverse showcases sculptor Miley Busiek’s bald eagle family design, which was created specifically for these coins. The image shows a male with an olive branch returning to the family nest, where his mate and hatchling wait.
These coins will arrive in clear plastic flips that provide protection for the surface of the coins during shipping and storage. Flips help keep dirt and dust off the coins.
Each coin contains 91.67% gold by weight, so each coin contains exactly 1/2 Troy ounce of 22-karat gold. They also include copper and silver, which makes the coins stronger and more durable.
