American Gold Eagle coins were introduced through the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The provisions of the act provided for the creation of a bullion and proof coin program, but only the bullion version would include the four planned weights immediately. In 1986, a 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz bullion coin were unveiled.
That same year the Proof American Gold Eagle was unveiled, but only made available in a 1 oz weight. The ½ oz weight was introduced in 1987, followed by the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz weights in 1988.
Each 1990-W 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin in this listing has PR70 grade from the PCGS. This is a perfect proof specimen, and has its full, original mint luster. You’ll find no detracting flaws on this coin.
A deep-cameo designation is reserved for coins with a stark contrast between the design sets and the background field. On these coins, the design set has a strong, frosted finish, while the background field is deeply-mirrored and clear.
On the obverse of all American Gold Eagles is the image of Lady Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The reverse bears the image of a family of bald eagles, and was created in 1986 by sculptor Miley Busiek.
