The obverse of the 1990 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin is graced with the first year of the newest right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II, which now depicts Her Majesty at 64 years of age. This new depiction features a more mature-looking Queen Elizabeth II, wearing the royal diadem, and a necklace and earrings. Having been featured on the obverse of all Canadian coinage since taking the throne in 1952, these depictions of Her Majesty have been updated occasionally to more accurately reflect her age.
The reverse of the 1990 Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin is adorned with a Maple Leaf. This exquisite design was created by master engraver Walter Ott, and clearly captures the texture and fine veins of the Maple Leaf. This design has stood the test of time, as it has remained virtually unchanged through the years, and can be seen on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins.
The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin was introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979 with a gold purity of 99.9%. The only other gold bullion coin available at that time was the Krugerrand. After a few years, the RCM increased the gold purity of the Maple Leaf to 99.99%, making it the first bullion coin to be minted at this high level of gold purity. The value of other 24-karat gold bullion coins is determined by comparing to the Gold Maple Leaf.
At the time of their introduction, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was produced only in the 1 oz denomination. This 1 oz size has been the most famous and best-selling weight. Like other coin series, the RCM later added additional weights to the collection. By 1990, the Gold Maple Leaf coins were available in 4 different weights – 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. The Gold Maple Leaf coin is legal tender.
As Canada continued to develop, the UK realized the need for a mint there. Thus the UK’s Royal Mint branch was opened in Ottawa in 1908. Under the Statute of Westminster in 1931, this mint was turned over to the control of the Canadian Government and renamed the Royal Canadian Mint. The RCM opened a second production facility in Winnipeg in the 1980s to boost production capacity.
